Two Tottenham brothers, who lit the spray from an aerosol can and aimed it at a bus driver, have been jailed for a year.

Michael Yard, 20, and brother Matthew Yard, 21, of Avenue Road, were stopped by the bus driver when they tried to board the N279 bus at about 1am on March 22. Matthew had a tampered travel card and the pair were refused permission to get on unless they paid the correct fare.

Matthew then took the aerosol can out of his bag and handed it to his brother, who ignited it and aimed it at the screen in front of the driver’s seat, while he kicked the door.

Both fled from the bus, but the Metropolitan Police’s Workplace Violence Unit identified them on CCTV and arrested them on April 19 before launching a prosecution.

At Westminster Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, they both pleaded guilty to affray, and Matthew was also found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon. They were jailed for 12 months.

Commander Adrian Hanstock, of the Met’s Safer Transport Command, called the incident “a completely senseless attack” and said the police would work with Transport for London to investigate assaults on staff.
