Axis Communications, the global leader in the network video market* has provided a new IP surveillance system at the Donarbon waste management park which has helped the business to save money both in terms of operations and insurance premiums.

Donarbon, which is Cambridgeshire’s largest waste management park and Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) plant, has replaced an analogue surveillance system with multiple, strategically placed Axis network cameras. The main driver for this change was to be able to identify unsuitable and hazardous waste entering the site, as well as providing clear images to site staff in the event of an incident.

Huw Gaskill, MBT manager at Donarbon, said “The Donarbon waste management plant is open to the public seven days a week. Although the majority of visitors abide by the rules of what can or can’t be taken to the site as black bag waste, we were becoming increasingly used to finding out of the ordinary objects. On one occasion a ship’s anchor was brought here. This issue is one of the main drivers for ensuring that the site is closely monitored to identify and discourage this practice.”

The MBT plant is the centrepiece of the 28-year PFI waste management contract between Cambridgeshire County Council and Donarbon and is responsible for treating the majority of household waste from Cambridgeshire and ensuring that councils meet their recycling and landfill diversion targets.

The Axis cameras were recommended by consultants 3IT, who have also installed them at Donarbon’s MBT plant where they have helped to reduce the down time of the machinery in the event of breakdowns.

Gaskill said: “The plant’s engineers are able to remotely monitor the equipment and quickly identify any faults, and the MBT plant technology providers, who are based in Austria, also have remote access to the surveillance system to assist the on site technicians with fault diagnosis when needed. The cameras’ PTZ functionality means that we can rotate the cameras 360 degrees and zoom which greatly assists with quickly locating blockages.”

The cameras are also helping to save money when it comes to insurance claims as Donarbon can now prove liability. Whenever a vehicle enters or leaves the site, managers now have video evidence and if any damage is caused they can quickly identify the vehicle responsible.

Donarbon’s IP surveillance system is even being used to educate visiting school parties on recycling and waste management as staff can show pupils how the MBT plant works without them having to go anywhere near the machinery.

Phil Doyle, regional director, Northern Europe, Axis Communications, said: “Donarbon needed high quality images and the ability to share footage remotely over its network, something that its existing analogue surveillance system was incapable of delivering. Now, thanks to its IP-based system, the park is able to run more efficiently, safely and at a much cheaper cost than before.”

About the Donarbon installation
3IT strategically placed Axis cameras in a number of key locations in the MBT plant. AXIS 225 Fixed Dome Network Cameras were positioned in the reception hall and a number of AXIS 221 Network Cameras were installed to monitor the entrance bays. AXIS 232D+ Network Dome Cameras were installed to monitor the preparation hall. All of the Axis cameras deliver excellent image quality, under all lighting conditions for round-the-clock surveillance over IP networks.

To view and record the footage taken from the camera, Donarbon uses AXIS Camera Station One, a software solution for the simultaneous viewing and recording of high-quality, H.264, MPEG-4 and Motion JPEG video, with no recording limitations.
